In Europe, the EPO (European Patent Office), based in Munich, is responsible for examining and granting of European patents (and in the future also of Unitary patents). Community trademarks and designs are protected by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). If the patent or trademark protection applies exclusively to Germany, the German Patent and Trademark Office (GPTO) is responsible.
